Determinism or coincidence? Is our existence as humans on a planet capable of sustaining life part of a greater plan or did all the intricacies that allow life to prosper on Earth come about courtesy of chance? This is a question that has fueled years of research, speculation and debates between the pragmatic and the faithful; the logical and the spiritual; science and religion.

This is the central driving question of the thriller Knowing, the latest directorial effort from Alex Proyas, who has shown in the past that he can at least competently pull off genre pics (I, Robot), if not excel at them (The Crow, Dark City). It's safe to say the streak is over for Proyas as Knowing strives to profoundly comment on the determinism vs. coincidence debate and falls flat on its face in the process. Disappointing in just about every way, the ambitious yet unfulfilling raises as many questions as it answers on its way to a ridiculous attempt at a resolution and only shows brief sparks of inspiration when it mimics past Proyas films.

Those looking for something fresh and resonant within the conversation of mankind's bigger picture will find as much to talk about as they would if they stared into a crystal ball for hours.
